Raquel appeared in her first local production at the age of five and has continued acting ever since.
Appearing in productions in and out of school, Raquel has worked in theatre productions where she has choreographed, written, and performed her own material in music, dance and drama.
Upon leaving school Raquel attended college continuing her education, also continuing acting and gaining more experience through attending local drama groups.
In 2003 Raquel landed her first role appearing in a BBC1 comedy, which reinforced how much she wanted to continue with the acting despite her physical disability, “If anything it's made me more determined to succeed” says Raquel. Raquel is determined to prove to herself and others that being physically limited does not mean that you cannot fulfill your ambitions and achieve your personal goals.
This then inspired Raquel to audition for a place on a BTEC National Diploma course in acting which she completed in July 2005. “Acting is something I love and have a passion for. I don't know what the future holds, however I am determined to continue and show people my ability to be a convincing actress without drawing too much attention to my disability”. Raquel is a member of Equity and Spotlight.
Acting
Even since Raquel appeared in her first local production at the age of five She continued gaining more experience. Raquel then realised that despite her disability, acting was what she had a passion for “ I remember being asked what I wanted to do when I was older and I said acting. I think most people thought it was a phase, but as they saw me become more involved in productions I think they realised it wasn't”
Raquel says she was and is inspired by actresses such as Amanda Donohoe, Alison King, Jaye Griffiths, Clara Salaman, Sandra Bullock, and Rea Baker. Actors Robin Williams, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Art Malik & Craig McLachlan "to name a few" adds Raquel. See Raquel's inspirations
Writing
As well as acting, Raquel is a keen writer, she has co-written a script which she hopes to develop for television.
Singing
Also a keen singer and song writer, Raquel says “I would love you explore the possibility of showing more of my creative side”. She admires the work of Janet Jackson.
Raquel adds “Janet has the courage to push the boundaries with her music and it's clear to see she's passionate about her work”
Whilst others may think Raquel ambitions a little unrealistic, she has never let this deter her.
Sport
“I love abseiling, I have been lucky enough to experience that a few times and I get such a buzz from it. I think as long as everyone's realistic about their capabilities then there's no reason not to aim high” Raquel's Sporting Achievements
Choreography
An enthusiastic choreographer it seems Raquel loves the thought of flying high quite literally. “I've watched people in shows flying around in harnesses/wires and thought I'd love to have a go choreographing something that incorporates some air born movement Torvil & Dean style. I admire people who push the boundaries and take risks and I am very passionate about dance”
“I think its important to have ambition, I accept that there are somethings I will never achieve, however I love challenges” despite being restricted that does not appear to stop Raquel’s continuing determination to want to show people there's more to her than just a woman who sits in a wheelchair.
